Consumer Price Index (CPI)

A monthly measure of how much prices for a typical basket of goods and services have changed.

The Consumer Price Index tracks the price of a fixed basket of everyday goods and services — groceries, rent, gas, and so on — and reports how that basket's total cost changes over time. The year-over-year change in CPI is the most commonly cited measure of inflation.

This site uses Statistics Canada's all-items CPI, not seasonally adjusted, published monthly. Because it's monthly data merged onto a daily series, the pipeline is careful to only apply each CPI figure from the date it was actually published, not the month it describes — otherwise a forecast could accidentally 'know' inflation data before it was public.
